This semester I am currently taking the “Design For Social Change” class with super rad professor Natalia IIlyin. She knows her shit, and is definitely well known within the design community. She has many books published and should definitely look her up.

What’s really rad about this class is the fact that you touch on different aspects of design. Being able to use design to move and influence the people in this world. Our first project was pretty much kicked into high gear since skipping the usual first day syllabus bull shit and went straight into the Charette project. The Charette project was meant to be finished within a short period of time, and what made it kind of hard for some people was the fact that it was a group project. The class in general is a good mix of Visual Communication and Interior Design majors so thats another cool aspect being able to integrate everyones skill set. The goal of the project was to figure out a way to lower the cost of our schools energy bill and put Cornish into a zero footprint school.

Our groups idea was to basically utilize emerging technologies and basically give cornish a “facelift” that we felt as though needed since our school’s interior is pretty ratchet looking, well in my opinion.

One of my main jobs was to brand our project and I was inspired from the definition of FLOW in a psychological sense

“Flow is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by complete absorption in what one does.”
I saw this as a perfect opportunity to brand this not only as a element to help our school but to impact many of the students/cornish community to be more aware of energy conservation and giving cornish a little bit more character, “to be known as that one school”

Some key words we kept in mind was

-Simple
-Practical
-Modern

We wanted to carry out a project we felt as though would be POSSIBLE to do. There was plenty of research involved along with a tour of the school’s operating rooms. We broke down the project in different phases and kept consistent with our FLOW concept.
